More Life

Posted in General, School, High School, College at 12:10 am by Nick

Mr. Wilkinson mentioned NaNoWriMo in class today, and said he would definitely make it worth while. Like, 200-500 points worth while. That is -alot- of extra credit right there people. For now I must work on my short story however. No novel yet. I must save my larger idea for November.

I was something like 30 seconds late to 2nd hour today and Flahrety (how the hell do you spell it?) gave me a tardy. I don’t really care, its just like Study Hall after school. I shall make it up today (thursday). Today will be my first day of first hour release and 6-7th hour release and 5th hour study hall. Should be nice. Only a few hours of real school. I do have to come back at 3 to make up my detention though…

I’ve been slacking so much lately. All of my concentration has been on CS I, Discrete Structures, and creative writing. I’ve kind of left Entrepreneurship (damn you Schaeffer! most of the class are ass holes anyway…) and Advanced Algebra and Trig. (AAT) in the dust. I must play catchup sometime here. I have two math assignments to do and some touching up on one of them. All -finally- due on Friday.

Expect some writing to be put up here eventually. As my short story unravels it will go through many stages on here. Maybe I’ll finally touch up the one story posted on here so its not all screwed up. Who knows.

Btw, Killer Queen by Queen is a great song.

Does anyone actually read my blog? Somehow I doubt it. ::laugh::

Dan completely kicked my ass in a few games of Magic a while ago. I suppose I had it comming since I kicked his ass earlier this week! :P Artifacts + Artifact affinity = annoying but good combo.

All Fixed

Spent a few hours today fixing everything up. WRITE now works perfectly. Took a bit of work with GDB and playing with some variables to get it all to cooperate nicely. Goto now works partially, but it all requires a bit more work.

Just thought I would give a small update on this :)

Creative Writing - Side Note

Posted in General, School, High School at 2:39 am by Nick

One more quick note before I do actually leave. Mr. Wilkinson said he will quite possibly give out extra credit to people who do NaNoWriMo, as we start the fiction unit today. Yay on a stick. Wooty. Fiction > Non-Fiction. Poetry > Fiction. Therefore, Poetry > Non-Fiction. Yay applied logic.

STOP, WRITE

Posted in Programming, School, College, ALPHA, Computer Science at 2:34 am by Nick

Time: 6 hours
Total: 41.5 hours
————————-
Alright, so I worked on my final for CS I a lot today. I mean alot. I’m quite a ways done. I seem to be randomly getting technical issues, which is probably because I’m tired. I will go to bed and resume work later today.

The underlying framework is done. You can grab a “word” (series of characters deliminated by white space), and it will determine if it is a line number (for reference by if’s and goto’s) or a keyword. Then it will evaluate the statement after the keyword.

Currently only STOP and WRITE work. Well, WRITE worked a while ago but for some reason seems to have died. A trouble for a later time I’m sure.

If you are curious as to the exact details of this project (and class) just head over to http://math-cs.cns.uni.edu/~okane/061/index.html. The specifications for the interpreter are under the Lab Project section. While it may be due at the end of the semester, if I can get it out of the way now then life may be easier. And he will be amazed. Almost there! :)

O’Kane got an eye injury (poor fellow), so I don’t have CS I today.

Lab Credit

Posted in Programming, School, College, ALPHA at 3:05 pm by Nick

So, I’ve talked with O’Kane and he said it would be fine (supposing I provided more details) to do a game. However, I think I may do the posted semester assignment. You make an interpreter for a BASIC-like language. With my scripting experience this should be a snap, especially since I will be reading from a file (which I can tell you, is much easier then parsing a string).

I also talked to Steve (McCrea) and he said since my project is on programming I can count the time I work on it for my ALPHA project. Wooty! My coding on the SGE will be post-poned until this semester project is done. It shouldn’t take long. :)

Twist

Posted in School, College at 1:36 pm by Nick

Professor O’Kane (CS I teacher) said we just had to write a fairly large program for our one hour of lab credit. Woot. I was asking him what it was and he said he didn’t know yet and was open to ideas.

Naturally I was thinking about making a text based adventure game in C++ (see Mini-RPG, which i never exported much on). This is pretty easy to do and doesnt require too much in the way of advanced techniques. I pitched the idea and he said its popular and it might be good to try. He asked for some specifications, so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say. I’ll think of something. Or talk to him tomorrow about it.

So, I may get an hour of college credit to write a game. Yay on a stick. :)

Official Recounting of GID 15

Posted in ALPHA, SGE Enhancement at 6:48 pm by Nick

Time: 10 hours
Total: 35.5 hours
—————————
Despite the numerous posts under the GID 15 topic, I never had an official overview for my log. So, here it goes.

These were the main things I recorded as getting done:
————————————————-
*Add scripting ability for AI functions
*AI function pointer to sprites
*Add ability to script a STARRY background
*Add ability to specify transparent color on bmp’s
*Add function to determine the bitmask of images
*Make background types semi-mixable via “flags”

That about as far as engine enhanements go. I did some various tweaks, but nothing really worth noting. Anything worth noting was probably posted about. An hour or two was spent on preliminary work (idea’s, reasearch, the document with my GID info in it, etc) and art work (which is very limited).

For a more in-depth analysis, go examine the GID 15 category.

NaNoWriMo

I was adventuring over at Nick’s Plan and I saw something call NaNoWriMo. Of course I was curious so I clicked the link. Wow.

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Simply put, you write a 50,000 word novel in November. 30 days. Doing the math it equates to something like an average of 6 pages a day, which seems like a reasonable goal.

I am doing this. I know I am. Let me know if you are too! It will be awesome! You don’t even have to meet the 50k requirement (in fact, most people don’t)! If you do, however, you will get a certificate. Just sit and write. Go for it. Its free. Everyone wins.

I have also e-mailed this stuff to Mr. Wilkinson, my Creative Writing teacher, in hopes he may say something to the students of my class and/or embark on this trial with me as well.

Tired (Like Always)

Posted in General, School, High School, College at 9:34 pm by Nick

Oh I am so very tired. However, it is amazing how I can run off 3 hours of sleep like I had a decent amount in the first place. I blame advanced algebra and trig for my strife, as I stayed up late to do the assignment due today. However, now she changed it. Its due Monday. Go figure.

Gym is slowly winding down. Good thing too. I can’t wait to sleep in, or eat breakfast, or both. That surely will be amazing. I am enjoying having a decent weight lifting workout in the morning. I really should fit weight lifting into my daily routine somehow.

I found out late last night that I will not have Discrete Structures class on Friday. That makes my day. I don’t have to be at UNI till 1:50! I have no idea what I will do to fill that time, but I’m sure something will come to me. I still have a fair amount of stuff that needs to be done, like always. I still need to write up my fitness plan for Dan (PE is so dumb…), do a math assignment that was due monday, as well as update a great many things. I haven’t posted an official accounting of GID 15, so I need to do that.

In any event, I shall save that for tomorrow. Now I will chill a bit, put togeather my Chimera (finally), take a shower and get a decent amount of sleep as I don’t have any homework that I have to do tonight. I could do some, but I choose not too.

Yup, definitely back into the procrastinator mode.

Uggh

Posted in General, School, High School, GSA at 11:51 pm by Nick

Where the hell did today go? Well, for the most part it was pretty kick ass. Lets recap.

I went to gym, first hour. I don’t mind it right now as we are just lifting weights and basically doing whatever we want (as long as we are doing something). After that a bunch of us headed over to the college fair at UNI. Pretty cool stuff. Some amusing comments (::points at ryan:: “He’s a senior. Enlist him! Go!”) were said, some stuff collected.

Apparently we were given till the beginning of 5th hour to get back. Ok, thats awesome. Godfather’s didn’t open till 11 (it was 10:15 or something), so after running home to get my blank cards we went to Ryan’s and played a good game of 1000 Blank Cards and had some pizza.

After such a time we went back to school. I stopped in guidence and got signed up for the PSAT (oh joy) and signed up as an ally for Alied Week (these rainbow ribon’s kick ass).

We (David, Dwayne and I) proceeded to the library and passed the time by talking about geometry and Warhammer 40k. When the bell rang for 4th hour to end I proceeded to study hall. After study hall (I read the PSAT booklet, some of it anyway) I went home, as today was Tuesday.

So, my classes today were Gym and SASH. Nothing else. Two hours, both extremely easy. Yay.

At seven I went to the GSA meeting. Twas better this time as Alex went, so I felt I had someone to really talk to. I don’t feel out of place, I just don’t feel like conversing with most of the people much on the tasks at hand.

Eating and a nap (family guy + futurama) has brought me to now. None of my homework is done, and it is nearly 12. ::sigh::

I suppose I better get started.
